EXHIBITION “IMPRESSIONS”
From February 20th to March 2nd  at Alliance Française Panjim

Opening on 20th February at 6.00 pm

The exhibition called Impressions, will be the culmination of their work in progress, which deals with the conflict between identities, in space and in time.

The exhibition is in conjunction with the place, Goa is a place where two cultures come together, one European and one Indian. This confrontation of identities is a source of inspiration for both visual artists whose work plays with essentially different identities, both personal and cultural.

Impressions depicts a conflict of identity in space and time. It will feature printmaking works -etchings, drypoints and woodcut. If Pereira portrays his characters to reveal their different identities, Schenck painted landscapes and nebula, playing with the identity of what is represented, as her own search on identity. While he uses the image of the mask to show what he hides, she uses the scratches as a visual language that erases, masks or disguises, playing on the identifiable.

Raymond Pereira uses the mask to show what he conceals, that is to say the underlying traits of people in their daily lives. It portrays a person with multiple facets , painted their disguise , disclose their hidden self, expressing their inhibitions.
The masks in the society have been used in various rituals, through various art forms such as dance, theater, etc. He even now widespread use, especially in politics to deceive people and take power. Thus, it allows an individual to act on its own identity by expressing “I am not myself ” or ” I ‘m someone else.” The idea has its roots in the ” Intruz ” or Goa carnival which precedes Lent. Here, the wearer of the mask trying to be someone or something he is not. There is a conflict of identity, space and time.

Annabel Schenck questions her identity through a visual work that plays on the notions identifiable : it intrigues the audience and questions about the identity of what is represented. For this, she makes a visual work in the image of the confrontation between his personal and cultural identity, playing on the ambiguity of forms which makes the whole enigmatic, blurring the tracks pictorially .
For the show Impressions, she displays large scale etchings and an artist book realized during her residency in Ray’s atelier, Goa.
The book is a unique copy containing  three original prints and texts of Albert Camus. While away from her home, the scenes of the daily life in Goa called sensations to her mind, “impressions” during the crepuscule described by Camus in The Outsider.
